Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry in Lumsden

Sedation Allows dentists to help people relax during their dental procedures, while still allowing patients to respond to physical stimulation and verbal command.

Many people are afraid of the dentist, whether it be due to bad experiences, anxiety from the sounds or sights around the dental office, or a fear of pain associated with treatments. Dr. Dale Thomson understands how difficult it can be to relax at the dental office. That is why Cottonwood Dental offers sedation to help patients stay calm when receiving a dental service.

Our Lumsden dental team empathizes with patients’ anxieties and takes a compassionate and gentle approach when administering care. If you require treatment but are worried about a procedure or dental service, contact our Lumsden practice and see how sedation dentistry can assist you.

Nervous about visiting the dentist? Sedation can help.

You deserve a healthy smile. Putting off routine checkups and dental work because of fear or anxiety can result in the need for much more invasive dental treatment or therapy. If you have avoided undergoing necessary dental care because you dislike dental visits, sedation dentistry can allow you to comfortably receive the treatment you need.

Benefits of DenTal Sedation In Lumsden

Dental sedation offers patients a relaxed way of receiving treatment. This helps alleviate concerns and relieve patients of common concerns.

Before treatment, we ensure that the patient is fit to be sedated, going over each option and discussing how it affects their perception during treatment. Patients benefit from a few advantages when using sedation. Those include:

  • Maximized comfort during a procedure
  • Conscious and responsive yet completely calm
  • Easily return to daily duties within the same day
  • Safe for many patients
  • Helps patients get through long procedures
  • Improves the patient experience

More about Sedation In Lumsden

At Cottonwood Dental, we offer nitrous oxide, oral conscious, and IV sedation options. Both forms provide unique benefits for patients and selecting the right type of relaxant is dependent on the person.

Nitrous Oxide – Commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is one of the least invasive forms of sedation. It is an inhalant that leaves patients in a euphoric state and disconnects them from the treatment they are undergoing. Oxygen quickly nullifies the effects of the laughing gas, leaving patients able to continue their day as they normally would.

Oral Conscious Sedation – Dr. Thomson prescribe an oral sedative for adult patients who require a mildly strong relaxant. This is a great option for long and extensive procedures as this medicine dulls the senses. Depending on the strength of the numbing effect needed, our dentist may increase or lower the dosage to ensure your comfort and ability to go about your day.

IV Sedation – Patients are administered this sedation option intravenously. This form of relaxant is typically used for shorter treatments and delivers the medicine directly to the bloodstream. The effects of IV sedation are near immediate, and patients feel like they have slept through the entire procedure even though they remain responsive. For this method, patients must bring a designated driver to take them from the practice home.

Your well-being is our priority, and we want you to have a positive experience at our Lumsden office no matter if sedation is involved or not.

Understanding Sedation Dentistry

The three common types of sedation are:

Inhaled Sedation

Inhalation sedation (also known as laughing gas), is typically administered in combination with a local anesthetic for pain prevention.

Laughing gas calms and comforts patients even though they remain awake, in control, and with the ability to communicate. It also tends to lessen anxiety, increase a patient pain threshold, reduce an overactive gag reflex and make time pass more quickly. It is often used in pediatric dentistry.

Oral Sedation

Oral Sedation involves pills or liquid taken orally. The medication allows patients to enter a state of total relaxation during treatment. Usually, patients also receive an injection of local anesthetic as well.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

These sedatives are administered directly into the blood-stream through the vein for the deepest level of sedation without general anesthesia.

If you choose oral or IV sedation, a responsible companion must accompany you to and from the visit. Before any dental procedures commence, the sedative effects of the medicine will cause the patient to become drowsy and relaxed.

Our dental team will attach you to a monitor so that the dentist can keep track of vital signs. At the completion of the dental procedure, you will be allowed to recover from the effects of the sedation before leaving the office with a friend or relative.

Feel free to resume normal activities sometime in the next 12 to 24 hours, but someone should stay with you for the first few hours at home.
